A new chapter for Buile Hill Mansion: restoration work picks up pace

  • Restoration of Salford's historic Buile Hill Mansion is well underway
  • Plans for a wedding venue, the new home of Salford Register Office and a brand-new café and a community room

Salford’s iconic Buile Hill Mansion is getting ready for a grand return.

The Grade II listed building, built between 1825 and 1827 for Thomas Potter, a wealthy textile merchant and Manchester’s first mayor, has stood at the heart of Buile Hill Park for generations.

It’s now being lovingly restored after more than two decades of standing empty. The much-anticipated transformation is well underway, and will be available for weddings and functions from early 2026.

Among the standout features being brought back to life is the mansion’s original grand staircase, which is currently being restored to its former glory. Craftspeople are also carefully refurbishing the intricate, ornate ceilings to preserve the elegance and historic charm that locals remember so fondly.

Once complete, the mansion will host weddings and functions in two beautifully refurbished rooms, each able to accommodate up to 80 guests.

For larger celebrations, the neighbouring Buile Hill Park Hall - which is newly refurbished - is available for larger weddings and functions, just a stone’s throw from the mansion.

Behind the mansion, work is ongoing to transform the gardens into a landscaped haven, offering a stunning backdrop for wedding photos and outdoor celebrations. A brand-new car park is nearly finished, making the venue more accessible for visitors and event guests.

But the plans for the mansion go far beyond weddings. It’s also set to become the new home of the Salford Register Office, making it a one-stop destination for couples planning their big day.

A ground-floor café will welcome park visitors and families and a new community room will be available for local groups to use for meetings, clubs, and activities.

It’s a major step forward for a building with deep roots in Salford’s history. Many residents still remember visiting Buile Hill Mansion when it was home to the city’s mining museum, and many talk about the lift shaft that went down, but actually never moved! The museum closed its doors in 2000, and for more than 20 years, the mansion sat silent. That began to change in late 2023, when restoration work began to bring the mansion back to life.

Excitement is building for the mansion’s next chapter! For more information visit the Venues in Salford website.
