Unwaged carers in Salford are being invited to take part in a week of free, fun and supportive events as part of national Carers Week from 9 to 15 June 2025.
Carers Week is an annual campaign to recognise the vital contribution that unwaged carers make to their families and communities. It also aims to raise awareness of the challenges they face and the support available — especially for those who may not realise they are carers.
Salford City Council is proud to support Gaddum Salford Carers Centre and other local organisations delivering a week-long programme of creative, educational, relaxing and social activities for unpaid carers of all ages.
Events include a treasure hunt and lunch, art and relaxation workshops, drop-in sessions and informal opportunities to meet other carers, share experiences and talk about the caring role.
A carer is anyone — adult or child — who looks after someone with an illness, disability, or mental health condition, without being paid to do so. Many people do not realise they are a carer and may miss out on support.
One Salford carer said:
“I couldn’t fault the service – Gaddum helped me at my lowest. Through them I now know how to log safeguarding concerns for my loved one.”
Councillor John Merry, Lead Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said:
“Unwaged carers make an extraordinary contribution to our communities, often without even seeing themselves as carers. This week is about recognising the work they do, celebrating their impact, and ensuring they can access the support they need. We’re proud to stand alongside Gaddum and others in supporting Salford’s carers this Carers Week.”
Councillor Mishal Saeed, Executive Support Member for Social Care and Mental Health added:
“It’s important that we shine a light on unwaged carers in our city – the people who often put their own needs last to support loved ones. Carers Week is our opportunity to say thank you, to raise awareness, and to let carers know you are not alone.”
To mark the start of Carers Week, Salford Civic Centre will be lit up on Monday 9 June, symbolising this year’s national theme: Caring About Equality.
