‘Don’t ignore domestic abuse!’
That’s the message from a group of survivors who have teamed up with Salford City Council to create a new campaign.
The Salford-based Parents 4 Positive Change group told Salford City Council that one thing that would have helped them when they were experiencing domestic abuse was if somebody would have phoned the police.
Sarah* (not her real name) said “People think it’s none of their business and don’t want to get involved, but by making that one call, even anonymously, it can make all the difference.”
The women had an idea about using stick figures in a campaign, because domestic abuse can affect anyone, any gender, any age and any background. The council took their ideas and developed the campaign, which will now run on outdoor digital boards, social media and feature on an ad van.
The message to anyone who witnesses domestic abuse happening is to call CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111, or the police on 101 or in an emergency 999.
Salford also has its own domestic abuse service, Safe in Salford, who offer lots of help and support. Find out more on the Safe in Salford website or call 0161 793 3232.
Councillor Barbara Bentham, Lead Member for Neighbourhoods, Environment and Community Safety at Salford City Council said “This is a great example of how we’ve listened to the people who know best, the survivors, and turned their ideas into a public awareness campaign. Domestic abuse has no place in Salford, and I encourage anyone who sees or hears it taking place to get help for the victim by reporting it via the numbers above.”
It’s estimated over 10,000 people in Salford experience domestic abuse per year, based on figures from The Crime Survey for England and Wales 2024.
