Essential works on Frederick Road for Salford Rise project
Frederick Road is set to close for six months from the Saturday 12 July to enable essential construction across the carriageway as part of Salford Rise, a key element of the Crescent Salford masterplan.
The new 220m elevated walkway will provide a traffic-free route over the road for pedestrians and cyclists and improve community connectivity.
The road will be closed between Lissadel Street and Leslie Hough Way to both vehicles and pedestrians, whilst Eric Wright Civil Engineering, lead contractor for Salford Rise, builds the elevated walkway over Frederick Road.
Vehicle diversion will be via Lissadel Street, Cromwell Road, Gerald Road and Seaford Road, and pedestrians will be able to walk up Broughton Road East to get around the closure. Access to the North of England Robotics Innovation Centre (NERIC) will be maintained.
Salford Rise will link Crescent Innovation to the University of Salford, the wider Crescent Salford masterplan and communities to the north. It will improve accessibility and encourage active travel through new walking and cycling routes.
Future works will see Salford Rise surrounded by high-quality public realm, 100 new trees and new planting, as well as public space for pop-up events.
Crescent Innovation forms part of the wider £2.5bn, 240-acre Crescent Salford masterplan being delivered by the Crescent Partnership, comprising ECF, Salford City Council and the University of Salford.
The 29-acre area, which received planning permission last year, is made up of new homes and 1.7m sq. ft of commercial, academic and research floorspace, building on existing state-of-the-art research and development facilities to drive further economic growth in the city and wider region. Salford Rise forms the backbone of Crescent Innovation and is a transformational element of the wider masterplan.
The Crescent Partnership has also recently secured planning permission for a world-class Acoustics building within Crescent Innovation, with work expected to begin on its construction in the summer.
Work began on Salford Rise in September 2024 and is set to complete in Summer 2026.
Whilst work on the length of the walkway is ongoing, there will also be parking restrictions in place on Lissadel Street and Broughton Road East for pedestrian safety.
Councillor Mike McCusker, Lead Member for Planning, Transport and Sustainable Development at Salford City Council said: “Salford Rise is a key regeneration project that will unlock the potential of the Crescent Innovation zone and better connect our communities with the wider Crescent area.
“These essential works that start in July will enable us to continue towards our goal of developing a green walkway and high-quality public spaces, improving accessibility and encouraging active travel as well as creating employment and education opportunities across the Crescent area.”
Further details on Salford Rise and project updates on the works will be released when they are available.
