First phase of Mariner’s Canal transformation to begin
Salford City Council is gearing up to start work on the first phase of improvements to Mariner’s Canal in Salford Quays.
A decision was made at the council’s Procurement Board to award the contract for the improvements.

The works will bring greenery and vibrant community spaces to the popular route through the Quays.
The canal runs alongside a residential waterfront in Salford Quays and connects some of the internal canal basins created during the area's redevelopment.
Councillor Jack Youd, Deputy City Mayor and Lead Member for Finance, Support Services and Regeneration at Salford City Council, said: “It is great news we have got the green light for this investment in Salford Quays. The first phase of the works will take place in early 2026 and will enhance the walking routes and outdoor spaces we have.
“The initial transformation will focus on the south-western paddle near the Water Sports Centre and the western side of the canal south of Grain Wharf Bridge.
“Plans include larger planting beds designed with local groups to boost biodiversity. Existing trees will be removed as part of the scheme, with an equal number of more suitable species replanted, improving visibility and protecting the long-term health and beauty of the avenue.”
When the works begin, the lower canal pathway will be temporarily closed but the upper route will remain open with clear diversions in place.
Councillor Youd continued: “We would love local people to get involved and work with our rangers and community planting scheme to plant the new greenery. No experience is necessary to take part in this community project and you will also get to meet new people.
“Please email rangers@salford.gov.uk to take part.”
