Salford Celebrates City’s 100 Heroes during Centenary Year

  • New project aims to identify and celebrate 100 Salford Heroes during city’s centenary year.
  • University of Salford students will lead in celebrating the city’s community champions and famous faces from the last 100 years.
  • Residents are encouraged to nominate who they think should be profiled and celebrated.
  • Nominations can made via the Salford Centenary website and emailing the Salford 100 team

From famous faces such as Albert Finney, John Cooper Clarke and Elkie Brooks, to Dame Sarah Storey, Peter Hook and Catherine Tyldesley, Salford has bred some notable sons and daughters. But it’s not just those household names in the public eye that make the city great and during its centenary year, the city will be looking to celebrate 100 Salford Heroes.

As part of the city’s centenary celebrations, Salford City Council and The University of Salford will be shining a spotlight on those Salfordians who have become city heroes during the last 100 years.

The roll-call of Salford heroes will include familiar names, but also those local residents who have been a part of the city’s proud heritage. From community champions, to influential business people and those locals who go the extra mile, to support others, build community spirit and help make the city what it is today.

Students from The University of Salford will be compiling a list of 100 Salford Heroes, but need the community to help with nominations and suggestions of those community champions who should be recognised during this important year in the city’s history.

The heroes will be interviewed by students and profiled on the Salford Centenary website, university channels and on social media, providing a platform for them to get the recognition they deserve.

Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett said:

“This is a great chance to shine a spotlight on those heroes within our communities across the city. Whether it’s a famous person you’re proud to call a fellow Salfordian, or that person at the end of your street, or on your estate that deserves credit for embodying the Spirit of Salford, we want to hear from you.

"Alongside a cultural programme, community activities and civic events, this 100 Salford Heroes project forms part of a whole range of special activity that will be happening throughout our centenary year.

"This is your centenary year and this project is your opportunity to nominate the people you know and admire and who deserve this special recognition and celebration.”

University of Salford Journalism Lecturer Robin Brown is co-ordinating the project with Salford City Council, said:

“It’s great that we are involving our students in the quest to honour the most deserving stories – and working with the council we can provide a fantastic opportunity for our students to help celebrate Salford's centenary. This year shouldn’t just be about the history of Salford, but about the characters helping to make our city so wonderful today. We can’t wait to tell some really inspiring and interesting stories.”

Nominations for the 100 Salford Heroes project should be sent to salford100@salford.gov.uk. Nominations should include full name, reason for the nomination and contact details.
