A striking new mural has appeared in Salford Quays to mark one month to go until the start of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 and to celebrate the city’s role as one of the host locations.
Created by renowned street artist Akse, the mural features local Salford schoolgirl Orla, who plays rugby and represents the next generation of sporting talent. The artwork captures the power, pride and potential of women’s rugby, as excitement builds for the tournament, which kicks off on 22 August 2025.
Salford will host two fixtures at Salford Community Stadium - on 22 and 28 September 2025 - and the city is already getting into the spirit, with the mural unveiled on Tuesday 22 July on the side of the Quayside MediaCity car park.
The mural is part of a wider national campaign from World Rugby and England 2025, with murals appearing in other host cities including Sunderland, Brighton and Leeds.
Deputy Mayor Councillor Jack Youd said:
“Hosting part of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 is another proud moment in Salford's history. Rugby has deep roots here and this tournament is a chance to celebrate that passion, welcome new fans, and showcase our city on the world stage. The mural is a powerful reminder of the pride we have in our communities and the importance of bringing world-class sport right to our doorstep."
Councillor Hannah Robinson-Smith Lead Member for Culture, Heritage, Equalities, Sports and Leisure added:
"It’s fantastic to see young girls like Orla at the heart of this mural, celebrating their love for the game and inspiring others. The Women’s Rugby World Cup isn’t just about the matches, it’s about creating opportunities, breaking barriers and helping more women and girls see themselves in sport. I’m so proud that Salford is part of that story.”
The Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 will see the world’s top teams compete across eight cities and regions in England, with the final taking place at Twickenham Stadium.
