Salford is set to benefit from £1.5 million in government funding following approval at the council’s Cabinet meeting this week to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) and its Pride in Place Impact Fund (PiPIF).

The council has secured an annual allocation of £750,000 for two years to address immediate local issues, to be spent before March 2027 and only on capital projects.

The Pride in Place Impact Fund was launched by the government in September this year and is part of the wider Pride in Place Programme (PIPP), and is focused on “immediate support to ensure other areas are able to deliver visible improvements” across three specific aspects set out by PiPIF:

  1. Community spaces: creating, extending, improving or refurbishing existing community facilities and enabling community organisations to take control or ownership of underused but valued local assets.
  2. Public spaces: enhancing the physical environment in public spaces - examples of initiatives include new or improved green spaces or public squares, improved outdoor play, sports and leisure spaces, installing street furniture, public art or wayfinding.
  3. High street and town centre revitalisation: making these areas more attractive and welcoming places where people congregate and which encourage economic activity. Examples of initiatives that could be funded are shop frontage improvements, adaptations that bring premises back into use, streetscape improvements, public art, trails and wayfinding, and creating or improving the infrastructure for regular markets.

The council will now work closely with MPs and other key stakeholders to decide how the money is spent and help make improvements in Salford.

Councillor Teresa Pepper, Lead Member for Skills and Work and Business Support at Salford City Council, said:

“I am delighted to be announcing this funding which  is a great boost for the city. People who live and work in Salford share a real sense of pride in the city. This funding gives us a fantastic opportunity to further invest in projects that provide positive benefits to communities and the local economy.

“We continue to be committed to creating vibrant and inclusive neighbourhoods, building a fairer, greener, healthier and more inclusive Salford for all. We will now work with a variety of stakeholders to decide where to distribute the funding across priority projects in Salford to help meet local priorities and make the places we live and work as attractive as possible.”
