Refugee Week is a celebration of the courage, resilience and creativity of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.

Salford’s re-accreditation—awarded by the UK Council of Sanctuary for a further three years (2026–2029)—highlights the city’s continued leadership in creating safe, inclusive communities.

This achievement reflects the efforts of council staff, partners and communities across Salford.

At the Salford City of Sanctuary Conference on 21 May, people came together to hear from inspiring speakers with lived experience, share ideas and shape the next phase of the city’s journey.

Their insights are helping to drive meaningful action and strengthen support for those seeking sanctuary.

Having received the award in March 2026, the council and its partners were recognised for their commitment to learning, embedding and sharing best practice.

The re-accreditation acknowledges the strength of partnership working across the city and the deep-rooted commitment to sanctuary principles across services.

It ensures Salford remains a place where people can rebuild their lives and thrive.

Councillor Barbara Bentham, Lead Member for Neighbourhoods, Environment and Community Safety, said: "As we mark the Refugee Week and celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Refugee Convention, I am proud that our city continues to be a City of Sanctuary. This year's theme, Courage reflects the resilience and determination shown by refugees who have overcome immense challenges to rebuild their lives. On behalf of the Council, I would like to recognise the valuable contributions refugees make across our city, enriching our communities, supporting local services and strengthening our economy. We stand in solidarity with refugees and remain committed to building a welcoming and inclusive city for everyone."

Maggie Filipova-Rivers, City of Sanctuary Programme Manager for Local Authorities said: “I am delighted Salford City Council has successfully achieved re-accreditation as a Council of Sanctuary. This follows a thorough review of the council’s practice, which clearly demonstrates sustained commitment, strong partnership working, and a deep embedding of sanctuary principles across services, underpinned by strong political leadership. I wish the council every success in continuing to build on this work, strengthening inclusive practice and influencing policy to ensure people seeking sanctuary are supported to thrive.”
