Salford Museum & Art Gallery shortlisted for national Family Friendly Museum Award

  • Awards recognise the most family friendly heritage sites in the UK
  • The museum will be visited by undercover family judges who will assess the shortlisted museums against the Kids in Museums Manifesto
  • Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in October

Salford Museum & Art Gallery has been shortlisted for the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Award, it has been announced.

Charity Kids in Museums has run this prestigious annual award since 2004, recognising the most family friendly heritage sites in the UK. It is the only museum award to be judged by families.

From February to late April, families across the UK voted for their favourite heritage attraction on the Kids in Museums website. A panel of museum experts, children and young people then whittled down hundreds of nominations to a shortlist of 20 heritage attractions.

Salford Museum & Art Gallery is vying against three other museums in the Best Medium Museum category.

Naomi Lewis, Head of Salford Museums & Galleries said:

“We are so proud to be shortlisted for this award. Our team work hard to make sure our museums are accessible for all and provide a fun free day out for families, so to be recognised for such a meaningful award is a fantastic achievement. Sometimes people think that galleries are not a place for the children but we want to change this perception – they are inspirational places bursting with new ideas, creativity and offer families of all shapes and sizes the chance to share new experiences and make memories. We strive to make sure we have accessible ways  for children to engage with our collections and provide lots of hands-on activities and creative opportunities.”

“Everybody is so kind. They always plan amazing event. The food is so good. It is a kind and caring environment.” Letts 8 ¾

“I liked dressing up because it was really funny to see how I looked in the outfit. I also loved walking through the Victorian Street with the lamp because it made me feel like I had gone back in time.” Daisy 10

Salford Museum & Art Gallery is a great place for families to have fun together. There are children activities within the galleries inspired by the current exhibitions, arts & crafts and a range of school holiday activities. It is also home to Salford’s famous Victorian street, Lark Hill Place, where children can immerse themselves in what life was like in the Victorian times with dressing up and other fun activities.

Over the summer holidays, the museum will be visited by undercover family judges who will assess the shortlisted museums against the Kids in Museums Manifesto, a set of guidelines on what makes a great museum visit for all ages. Their experiences will decide a winner for each award category and an overall winner of the Family Friendly Museum Award 2026. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in October.
