Salford’s new pedestrian and cycling route now open

  • This is approximately one kilometre of high quality walking infrastructure and one kilometre of dedicated cycling provision
  • 12 new trees have been planted and 11 new benches installed with a 100 square metre rain garden created

Salford’s new safer pedestrian and cycling route at Chapel Street and New Bailey is now open.

The scheme delivers approximately one kilometre of high quality walking infrastructure and one kilometre of dedicated cycling provision, along with widened footways and a new Toucan crossing.

The project rebalances road space in favour of people travelling on foot and by bike, while still accommodating buses and general traffic.

Along the route, 12 new trees have been planted and 11 new benches installed. A 100 square metre rain garden and 85 square metres of planting beds have also been created to support Sustainable Urban Drainage and improve biodiversity.

Councillor Mike McCusker, Lead Member for Planning, Transport and Sustainable Development at Salford City Council, said: “This new route is a major step forward in making it safer, easier and more pleasant for people to walk and cycle around Chapel Street and New Bailey. The area is a key gateway to Manchester city centre and incredibly well used.

“The improvements create a more attractive environment in our city and will encourage people to choose more sustainable ways of travelling.

“The scheme finished ahead of schedule, so we’ve been able to open it well before Christmas for people to enjoy."
