Salford set to benefit from up to £40 million to deliver ambitious, community‑driven regeneration

  • Government funding secured to bring positive changes that communities want to see over the next 10 years.
  • Pendleton and Peel Green selected to receive up to £20 million each.
  • The council will now consult with local residents and stakeholders to enable communities to decide where funding is allocated.

Work is underway to enable communities to decide how £40 million of government-secured funding can be spent over the next 10 years as part of the Pride in Place programme, in one of the biggest regeneration schemes of its kind in Salford.

Last year, the government announced Pendleton and Peel Green would receive up to £20 million each, with Salford City Council providing direct support to enable communities to make their own decisions on how the funding is spent.

Now more details of how the two schemes will be delivered have been released by the government, paving the way for one of the biggest and most ambitious public consultations in the two communities.

From March, the council will actively engage with local communities, giving residents a real voice in shaping improvements and ensuring funding goes toward the projects that reflect local priorities that matter most to local people.

Neighbourhood Boards will be formed and recruited to, made up of local people with active involvement in their communities. The Boards will drive the creation of a bold 10-year vision and an ambitious four-year investment plan to ensure that the funding is spent in ways that have the best impact in the two communities. Salford City Council will act as the initial accountable body, providing strong governance and financial oversight to keep momentum high. Communities and local MPs will be at the heart of the process, shaping priorities and championing transparent, community-led decision making every step of the way.

Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said:

“This is significant funding that will have a huge, positive impact in communities. We want to ensure that the right processes and decision making – by local people, for local people – are in place to deliver lasting improvements in Pendleton and Peel Green that best meet the needs of the communities. By putting local people in the lead, we are building stronger communities, revitalising public spaces and giving residents the power to take control of their future.

“As we celebrate our Centenary year, we are coming together – residents, community leaders and the council – to create lasting change in the areas that need it most. This isn’t just about progress; it’s about fostering a deep sense of belonging through empowerment, cohesion and trust. This investment is a unique chance to truly elevate community voices, ensuring that everyone who lives and works here can share in the city’s continued success.”

In June 2025, Pendleton was chosen as one of only 25 “trailblazer” areas across the UK to receive up to £20 million over the next decade as part of the government’s £1.5 billion ‘Plan for Neighbourhoods’ Programme. This initiative focuses on visible local improvements, empowering local leadership and fostering community engagement and social cohesion.

In September 2025, Peel Green was subsequently selected to receive up to £20 million of government funding as part of the £5 billion ‘Pride in Place’ Programme. Designed to tackle local challenges, improve public spaces and boost economic activity through community-led regeneration, local residents will help to shape the area for the better to make a real difference.
