Landlords in Salford’s new Selective Licensing area can now apply for a licence to rent out properties.

Salford City Council approved the scheme in September, covering parts of Broughton, Kersal, and Broughton Park. Under the scheme, landlords in these areas must obtain a licence to legally rent out their properties.

The standard licence fee is a one-off payment of £609. However, landlords who join the Council’s voluntary Accreditation Scheme and apply promptly can benefit from a reduced fee of £390.

Each licence includes conditions to ensure properties are safe, well-managed, and habitable. Operating a privately rented property without a licence, or failing to comply with licence conditions, is a criminal offence.

The scheme officially begins on Wednesday 21 January 2026.

Councillor Tracy Kelly, Statutory Deputy City Mayor and Lead Member for Housing and Anti-Poverty at Salford City Council, said:

“This scheme is designed to improve the standards for people who rent homes in the designated areas. Residents who rent deserve to live in a property that is free of damp and mould.

“We are encouraging landlords to apply early for their licence and take advantage of the reduced fee. And we have continuously said throughout the process, good landlords have nothing to fear.”
